BankyW Tells His Story: I Sold My CD’s At Salons To Survive
Excerpts:
"Everybody knows me to be the Chief Executive Officer, CEO, of EME, but what people do not know is that EME started when I was in my third year in university in New York.
You see, we all dream dreams, but it is important to think very big and start where you are because God never gives you everything but gives you enough to start.
At that time, I knew I wanted to do music, but of course I understood nobody starts by selling a million CDs or the big screen!
I worked in fast foods outlets, clothing stores and as a knife salesman, selling knives from door to door. That way, I gathered money to pay for studio recording time. I was recording with a close friend at that time.
After making that music, we printed a thousand CDs though we didn't have any fan. I had one battered car that broke down virtually everywhere, so we would print black and white posters, stick them on the sides of the car, sell from the car's trunk and drive to salons to do marketing.
We would walk to the owners of the salons, greet politely, and ask them to let us entertain their customers. Sometimes, some would kick us out and sometimes some would say yes. If told yes, after singing for a minute or two, we would sell our CDs to the customers! That was the beginning!
A lot of people see you on stage and see the success but do not know what you had to go through! I never had one really big break; it was always two steps forward and a couple backwards.
But I just decided that I was going to make music work for me. That was why I moved on to a new salon each time any salon rejected me!
I just kept going because I believe failure is when you give up. Albert Einstein said he tried a hundred times to make the light bulb. When he was asked what kept him going during the 99 times, he said: 'I didn't consider those 99 times as failure; rather, I considered them 99 ways that it didn't work!'
We went about selling CDs and, on the days we couldn't sell much, we would sit down and be broke together. I remember my friend was a member of a church that usually served food after service. So, on the days we didn't sell CDs and were too broke to buy food, we would attend service in that church so we could pack rice and store in the fridge.
At a point, being a student of industrial engineering, I was working for an engineering company and was recording as well. I would go to work from 7am till about 2pm and then go to school till about 8pm, and then drive two and a half hours to New York City where the studio that would let us record for less was, and record until about 2am.
I would then drive two and a half hours back home to be back at work at 7am the following day.
One day, I was driving home from work and was so tired that I fell asleep while on a bridge. I would have driven off from the top of the bridge to God knows where, if not for an on-going construction work. God really saved me!"
After a while, Banky's hard work began to pay off and, even while in school, he began winning awards, beginning with the 'Albany Idol' competition. Other international awards soon followed.
In 2008 when he decided to move to Nigeria after the completion of one of his albums, Mr Capable, Banky was consistently told his genre of music 'would never appeal to Nigerians and therefore wouldn't 'sell'.
As he got turned down, pressure mounted on him and his manager to change their genre of music but Banky strongly held on to another long-standing principle which had taught him to stand out by being unique rather than trying to imitate anyone's skill.
He therefore insisted on sticking to R&B, and this paid-off as he soon became a household name in the Nigerian entertainment industry!
Banky's advice:
"You cannot say enough about the grace of God and I therefore do not want to claim any form of glory. Falling down is inevitable but getting back up is optional!
Frankly, you can't appreciate sunshine if you've never been through a heavy rain. Yes, life is tough, but what do you do in those tough moments?
Do you learn the lesson, stand up again, consider yourself stronger and keep going? Or do you sit down and feel sorry for yourself?

Armoured cars: Jonathan bars Oduah from BASA signing ceremony
Oduah, who had left Nigeria for Israel ahead of Jonathan, is facing a twin-prong probe from the Presidency and the House of Representatives over her role in the acquisition of two overpriced armoured car valued at N225 million.
Oduah is said to have gone to Israel with the hope that she could use the opportunity of the visit to explain her position on the controversial car deal to Mr. President and take part in sealing the air deal with the country. Competent sources said that the President had not given the minister any opportunity to discuss the issue with him since his arrival in the Holy Land last Wednesday.
Brymo to Pay N22Million Or stay at Chocolate City Until 2016!!

A source at the Chocolate City re-affirmed that there is indeed an injunction against Brymo and any plan he has till he fulfills his contract with Choc city. Sources also told NaijaMp3s that Brymo has 2 albums left in his contract with Chocolate City which expires in 2016.
Brymo has been served the injunction notice and he is now wanted by the court for compromising his contract with the recording company. The law firm consulting for Chocolate City have also included a buyout clause for Brymo which is set at 22 Million Naira. Brymo has been asked to play out his contract with Choc city or simple just activate the buyout clause of 22million Naira which was also confirmed by a source at chocolate city who confirms Choc city boss, Audu agreed to, in order to resolve the issue.
When asked our Jesse Jagz wasn't served an injunction when he released his "Thine kingdom Come" ; NaijaMp3s was told that Jesse's contract with Chocolate city was over and it was easy for Jesse Jagz to quit the label without any problem. It should be recalled that during Brymo's press conference he told reporters that his lawyers couldn't get him out of the problem he was in with Chocolate city and that was why he had to come out to the public.
We hope this doesn't get escalated than it already has and hopefully Chocolate City and Brymo would settle their differences so we can all enjoy good music that Brymo provides us with.

Aviation workers threaten to go on strike
The NCAA had reportedly paid about N255m for two bulletproof BMW 760 Li cars.
The NCAA, while appearing before the House of Representatives Committee on Aviation in Abuja on Thursday, admitted that the Ministry of Aviation approved the purchase of the cars for Oduah.
The Director of Aerodrome, NCAA, Mr. Joyce Nkem-Akonam, who handled the transaction as the acting Managing Director of the NCAA, told the committee that the agency breached no law, as "leased financing, not direct financing, was adopted to procure the vehicles."
Speaking to one of our correspondents on Friday, the National President, Air Transport Service Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, Benjamin Okewu, however said the association did not buy NCAA's explanation and would hold a meeting next week to conclude its plans on the protest.

Within a few months of the release of his single Sho Lee, he has been transformed from nobody into one of Nigeria's fastest rising music acts and now he says he is set to take the industry by storm.
In a recent interview he opens up about his successes and his private life.
"I faced a lot of challenges trying to get a record deal. Playing free gigs was a normal thing for me. Sometimes I even paid to perform in shows but I think it comes with the terrain. Even right now, I'm still facing lots of challenges. Though, there was no time I felt like walking away from music, the experience could be frustrating. There were times I was stranded and had to beg people for money on the streets just to make it to the studio for a recording.

A lot of girls are not true to themselves. They think they are what they are not but at the end of the day, when you probe them, you discover that they are shallow. But I still love and respect them; I love sexy girls. They scream when I perform. I remember being at Elegushi Beach at the very beginning to promote Sho Lee. After my performance, there was this lady who was all over me. She just pounced on me and gave me the kiss of my life screaming, 'I love your music.'! That was when I knew I was finally getting there"
When asked if he has a woman in his life, he says,

UBA introduces U-Mall
The new U-Mall allow several small business owners in different sectors of the economy open online stores hosted on a single e-commerce platform to display and sell their goods online to potential shoppers on the internet and during the formal launch of U-Mall a new e-commerce platform to support SMEs, launched in Lagos on Thursday.
Yinka Adedeji, Head, e-Banking, UBA Plc, said that part of the key benefit of the U-Mall is the removal of entry barriers for SMEs looking for a wider market for their goods through an online platform. According to him, with U-Mall, consumers are able to browse from one store to another to look for great products and attractive bargains. "Specifically, a consumer can add items to their shopping cart across multiple stores and once submitted the product requests are sent to the respective merchants and the logistics partner and the selected products delivered conveniently to the customer as soon as payments are made. The logistics partner FedEx (RedStar Express Plc) picks up products from merchants and delivers to the customer usually within 24 hours for purchases in the Lagos metropolis and between 2-3days in most locations in Nigeria," He said.
Two planes collide at Lagos Airport
The Turkish Airline plane wings collided with that of Max Air plane which had brought in Pilgrims from Saudi Arabia. The Turkish Airplane had landed safely but was taxiing to stop at the airport's apron when its wing collided with that of Max Air.
The collision resulted in minor damages to both airplanes and sources said they had been taken away for repairs. Spokesman, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Mr. Fan Ndubuoke confirmed the incident. He however said damages to the aircraft belonging to both airlines were minor and that both planes had been taken away for repairs.

For a lot of women, a smart man is a sexy man. Knowledge is power, and it can definitely intrigue a woman. Having the ability to carry on an intelligent conversation can have a very positive effect on a woman.

Girl Commits Suicide Because Of Facebook
The incident occurred late on Wednesday night after 17-year-old Aishwarya S. Dahiwal had an argument with her parents over using Facebook on her computer.
According to investigating officer G. H. Lemgude, Aishwarya's parents had objected several times to her using social networking sites and chatting long over the mobile phone.
"Like all parents, their intentions were only to ensure that the girl did not go astray. They advised her to concentrate on her technical studies and stay away from long mobile chats and social networking sites," Lemgude said.
After the argument on Wednesday night, Aishwarya went to her room, penned a suicide note and hanged herself.
In the note, Aishwarya reportedly wrote that she had been constantly prevented from using Facebook by her parents.
"Is Facebook so bad? I cannot stay in a home with such restrictions as I can't live without Facebook," her suicide note said.
A note referring to the argument and Facebook is being examined by police.
The Dahiwal family, comprising jeweller Sunil Dahiwal, his wife and two sons are in a state of shock.
Experts say that there are almost always multiple causes for a suicide, including psychiatric illnesses, that may not have been recognised or treated.
Internet use remains low across India but is growing quickly, expected to reach about 200 million online out of the 1.2 billion-strong population by the end of 2013.
About three-quarters of India's high school students prefer Facebook over phone calls to communicate, according to a survey released in June by Tata Consultancy Services.
