STRIKE: UNILAG ASUU Crisis Deepens As Lecturers Engage In War Of Words

The crisis between the leadership of the University of Lagos, Akoka, chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, and a reported faction of the union, which started on Monday further degenerated yesterday, as the two camps engaged in abusive languages, throwing allegations and counter-allegations.

Trouble had started on Monday when two lecturers in the institution's Faculty of Arts, Dr. Adeyemi Daramola of the Department of English and Dr. Michael Ogbeide of the History Department walked out of the chapter's congress and called a press conference insisting that lecturers were tired of ASUU's leadership style of not taking into consideration members' positions on the five-month-old strike.

The lecturers had alleged that the national secretariat of ASUU had concluded plans to postpone the resumption of the union to January, 2014 as against members' position nationwide which they claimed directed the NEC to consider President Goodluck Jonathan's new offer. They therefore insisted that if the strike is not called off this week, the university would be forced to back out.

However, the Chairman of the chapter, Dr. Oghenekaro Ogbinaka, who had on Monday refused to comment on the matter, yesterday issued a press statement and accused the duo of Daramola and Ogbeidi of being "misguided, disgruntled and paid Judases. They were hell bent to deliver on the mission of betrayal for which they have been paid."

"At the Congress Meeting of November 25, 2013 that also had the Ibadan Zone's leadership -Congress overwhelmingly reaffirmed its commitment and unalloyed support to the leadership of ASUU in its effort to resolve the remaining grey areas in its discussion with the Federal Government of Nigeria.

12yr Old Boy Rapes Younger Sister After Watching Porn On The Internet

A 12-year-old boy has been sentenced after he tried to re-enact scenes from a porn film he watched on the internet by raping his younger sister.

According to Dailymail,  the schoolboy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, searched for hardcore films on the internet with a classmate - then went home to practise what he had seen on his younger sister who was under the age of 10.
He shares a bedroom with his younger sister.

Their parents discovered what was going on when the scared little girl confided to a relative that her brother had touched her.

The boy was questioned by another family member and he admitted having urges he could not control. He knew what he was doing was wrong and the sexual abuse had been going on for a year.

The boy was charged to court where he admitted to three charges of rape,  and was sentenced to a three-year youth rehabilitation order.

Zimbabwe outlaws Nigerians from trading in their country

According to news reports, starting from January next year, Nigerians trading in Zimbabwe will no longer be allowed to. Zimbabwean authorities said they have given foreign shop-owners, mostly Chinese and Nigerian nationals, an ultimatum to shut down their businesses by January. 1, 2014.

A top official of the black empowerment ministry said only Zimbabweans had the right to run shops that have sprung up across the country and are termed foreign businesses targeted under the nation's black empowerment laws, the state-controlled Herald newspaper reportedFriday.
Those laws, passed in 2007, demand foreign businesses to cede 51 percent control to local blacks. The foreign shop owners have been criticized for taking retail trade opportunities from Zimbabwean traders by selling cheap imports.

Is this a new trend, where celebs take swipes at each other about their supposedly 'fake lifestyles' on social media? Singer Lami Philips is the latest celebrity to add her voice. She posted an article on her blog titled Celebrity Mumuism where she called out 'upcoming' celebs on their 'lies'. Well this article contains if not much, some element of truth..Read her post below

Now whenever upcoming "celebs" post pictures with other established "celebs" in clothes from a stylist they have paid approximately 20k or so and with bling that aint quite bling….talking about " we outchea making it happen"…then wait till after the function to hitch a ride knowing they squatting at some friends place and don't know where their next meal is coming...I tag that as mumuism. The interesting thing is that this "mumuism" has a snowball effect. Other people see it and want to be like them and quit school or work in the hopes that they also can one day take pictures with these people.
At the risk of sounding like a sour grape…when all is said and done…common sense will never be outdated. I don't see the sense in creating a false image of success at the detriment of your own peace of mind.
I get it if your "faking it till you make it" but the "faking it" process better have a plan and a timeline if not your going to wind up being that person people use as a bad example.

Oh now I feel bad already! I should be nice right?! I shouldn't go in on the fatally insecure ones who would do just about anything to be "popular". Hey ..if you can "Kim Kardashian" your quest and somehow make money from it…..great!! BUT, if all you focus on is how to get in on paparazzi pics after spending money you don't have on a makeup artiste and stylist …then you end up being the "….and friend" tag in the spread of pics.,….I say "epic fail".

My take on life is figure out what you are actually good at , perfect that talent /skill, and then map out a plan to make it work for you without compromising the essence of your sincere identity.

At the end of the day, all these people we try to impress aint going to bed thinking about us and will move on when the next person comes along serving something slightly close to your offering.
You've got to figure out who you are (with the help of your creator) and make that work for you.
It makes no sense to struggle at being someone else!! God didn't create clones or Robots. If He wanted to He would have. He created Unique human beings….so do that…be Unique…Be you….

Kanye Bans Kim From Having Cosmetic Surgery

Kanye West has reportedly banned Kim Kardashian from undergoing cosmetic surgery, according to their pre-nuptial agreement.

According to Heat Magazine, Kanye - whose mother Donda tragically died from surgery complications after a breast reduction and liposuction in 2007 - is having a clause written into their pre-nuptial agreement stating that Kim will have to pay a reported $500,000 if she has any work done.
He is said to have warned her their wedding is off if she goes under the knife before their big day after discovering an email from a surgeon about secret plans for surgery.

Another wonderful clause reportedly in their pre-nup limits the control Kanye's future mother-in-law, Kris Jenner, will have in Kim and Kanye's marriage.
The insider explained to heat magazine:

''Kanye's also inserted a mother-in-law clause which means Kris will have no say in decisions which affect them as a couple. Even work ones.

'The pair will also have to pay financial penalties if one of them cheats on the other, though insiders insist this is a ''standard'' clause.
The source added:

''There's also an infidelity clause like Khloe and Lamar had, which states they would receive $250,000 if the other person cheats, and a drug clause stating both would be subject to random drug testing at the other's wishes. It's standard - they're just planning for every eventuality.''

Oshodi, Ikeja Top S*xual Abuse Areas In Lagos

Statistics gathered by a human rights organisation, Partnership for Justice, has shown that sexual assaults such as rape are mostly common in Oshodi, Ikeja, Agege and Ketu areas of Lagos.

Managing partner of the group, Itoro Eze-Anaba, said this in Lagos on Monday during the opening of the Marabel Centre – a sexual assault and referral centre – located at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.

She said the purpose of establishing the centre was to provide assistance for rape victims without divulging their secret.

She said, "From July to November 25, the centre has offered free services to 124 victims who have been raped or sexually assaulted in Lagos State. Our statistics show that majority of the survivors of rape are children between the ages of 11-15.

"Children are more at risk of sexual assault in Oshodi/Mafoluku, Ikeja, Agege/Oko Oba, Mile 12/Ketu areas. The Mirabel Centre offers medical examination and treatment for illness and injuries caused by sexual assault. We counsel to help cope with emotional and psychological effects of rape and help in reporting the incident to the police."

Chief Medical Director of LASUTH, Prof Wale Oke, added that the centre would increase access to Lagosians, whom, he said, suffer more from sexual assaults.

He said, "Victims of rape or sexual assault may feel ashamed, angry, guilty, distressful and anxious. There may be a disbelief of what has happened to them, and hence they need to get back to their normal lives as quickly as possible.

"Whatever they feel is normal; they need back their lives and must be committed to restoring it. Women in Lagos have always been at the forefront of the liberation struggle, and we owe an immense debt of gratitude to women for the instrumental role they play in the polity."

Chairman, Advisory Council, National Human Right Commission, Abuja, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, emphasised that those found guilty of sexual assaults should be punished.

"We must stop being silent and stop negotiating certain boundaries in the name of family name or friendship. Defaulters of sexual assaults should be severely punished because we have to stop exposing our children and women to risk of rape and other sexual assaults," he said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Felix Ogundeji, urged Lagosians not to hesitate to report rape cases to the police before evidences became vague.

"There is no police station that you will report sexual assaults case to that won't help you. All you need to do is to ensure that you contact them early so the evidences can be easily proven and justice can be well ascertained. You should know that good evidences are required to excel in a criminal case," he added.

24yr-old farmer nabbed for beheading toddler

Nemesis has caught up with a 24-year-old farmer, Danladi Abubakar, who allegedly beheaded an 11-month-old  girl for rituals.

Danladi, after being arrested by the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, confessed that the deal was to fetch him N20,000. He was allegedly contracted by a man in Bida, Niger State,  who is said to be on the run.

The incidence happened in Fujeregi village, Gbako Local Government Area of the state recently.

The farmer was said to have sneaked into the room of the baby's father, Malam Mohammed Worogi, where he smuggled the baby to a hidden place and beheaded her. He also severed her private parts.

The sudden disappearance of the child soon aroused the parent's curiosity. The villagers then constituted a search party but their efforts did not immediately yield any dividend until a special prayer was organised.

After the prayers, Danladi came out  and confessed to the crime.

The incidence was immediately reported at the police divisional office in Lemu town leading to Danladi's arrest.

He was immediately charged to Minna Magistrate Court 7 on one-count charge of culpable homicide punishable under Section 222 of the panel code law.

When the charge was read to him by the presiding magistrate, Maryam Ladidi King, he pleaded guilty.

Gunmen Attack Aviation Minister Stella Oduah!

Last Friday in Abuja, gunmen reportedly attacked and fired at a car belonging to the Minister of Aviation, Ms Stella Oduah.
 
Deputy Superintendent of Police, Altine Daniel, speaking for the police, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the incident occurred at about 10pm on Friday, but was only reported to the police on Monday.
Confirming the incident, the minister's spokesperson, Joe Obi claimed that the shooting took place at Ministers' Hill in Maitama area of the Federal capital territory, Abuja.  
 
It was not clear if the vehicle was the Minister's private car, or an official one, but Ms. Daniel said Ms. Oduah was fortunately not in the vehicle when the incident took place.
 
According to the police spokesperson, some strange metal objects, which do not look like the conventional bullet, were discovered in the vehicle, and they will be subjected to ballistics examination.
 
Mrs. Oduah recently stepped into hot water when news broke she authorized the purchase with official funds of two bullet proof cars by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority for her use.
 
Returning from the United Kingdom on Sunday, President Goodluck Jonathan confirmed that he had received the report of a three-man committee he set up to probe the role of the Minister in it.
Nigerians are calling for the Minister to be prosecuted, but Mr. Jonathan did not say if any action would be taken.
 
One analyst contacted by SaharaReporters said Friday's 'attack' might have been something stage-managed to attract some sympathy to the Minister.

UNILAG SSANU Threatens To Embark On Indefinite Strike

Following two previous warning strikes, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) University of Lagos Chapter, has threatened to embark on an indefinite strike to protest non-payment of allowances to its members at the verge of the end to current ASUU strike.

Speaking at a press conference held at the secretariat of the Union on Thursday, SSANU Chairman, UNILAG chapter, Comrade Adekola Adetomiwa described the payment of N180, 000 by the institution's management against N360, 000 enjoyed by their colleagues in other universities as unacceptable.
According to him, University of Ibadan (UI), Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNNAB), and University of Benin (UNIBEN) have been benefiting from the N360, 000 templates.

Adetomiwa affirmed that leadership of the union will continue to demand for payment of the agreed template because it was their right.

"Doctors at the medical centre were omitted by the UNILAG authority in the template while names of other members of staff were also missing," he said.

"The monitoring committee has stated that workers on levels 1-5 be paid N80, 000 and levels 6- 15 be paid N360, 000.Management should speak out if the money released by government is not enough to go round."

"UNILAG generates the average of N5b Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) every year, yet nothing to show for it on campus." adding that apart from the strike action, the union will also consider the option of legal means to fight its cause.

Recalling its meeting with the Pro-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Jerry Gana, the union leader who disclosed it was agreed that everyone would be paid, dismissed the audit report of over staffing as untenable.

"We are not begging the university authority to pay this money, it is our right. It is 360 but 180 template. The allowances that accrued to the tune of N360, 000 are; responsibility allowance, excess workload, hazard, laboratory and clinic allowance," he stated.

Responding, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Management Services, Professor Duro Oni dismissed the claims, explaining that the Federal Government was aware of how the university disbursed its funds.

He urged the union to remain calm saying any form of disturbance or threat to peace on the campuses would not be tolerated.

Angola Reportedly Bans Islam, Destroys Mosques

According to several Angolan newspapers, Angola has become the first country in the world to ban Islam and Muslims, taking first measures by destroying mosques in the country.
"The process of legalization of Islam has not been approved by the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, their mosques would be closed until further notice," Rosa Cruz e Silva, the Angolan Minister of Culture, was quoted by Agence Ecofin on Friday, November 22.
Silva's comments were given during her visit last Tuesday to the 6th Commission of the National Assembly.
She asserted that the decision was the latest is a series of efforts to ban 'illegal' religious sects.
According to the minister, the action was necessary to fight relentlessly against the emergence of congregations whose worshipping is contradicting with the customs of the Angolan culture.
