The player's eyes and tongue had been cut out and his head placed inside one of his own rucksacks, police said. Mr Santos retired from football two years ago after a successful career playing for several teams in Rio de Janeiro, as well as for clubs in Sweden and Honduras.
He had recently set up his own business selling health foods and dietary supplements.
Police said today that Mr Santos is believed to have been snatched from outside the shop he had opened in the Realengo district of Rio as he closed up at around 7.45pm on Monday.
Witnesses said they saw several men bundling him into his car, a Hyundai i30, and speeding off just before midnight, a spokesman said. He was reported missing by his wife at 9pm on Monday.
Mr Santos' brother-in-law, who didn't want to be named, told Brazil's Globo G1 website that the player's wife, Geisa Silva, 31, stayed up all night after her husband failed to arrive home.
He said: 'Every time a car passed by she would go to see.
'She was getting ready to go to work at around 5.30am when she heard a noise, opened the front door and saw his rucksack.
'When she opened it she discovered it contained his head.
'I did not want to look but the people who saw it said they had gouged out his eyes and cut off his tongue,' said the horrified relative.
Neighbours living close to the crime scene reported hearing a woman screaming: 'My God, it's Joao! It's Joao's head.'
From what I know, he didn't have any enemies and neither did his wife,' the relative added.In a statement Mr Santos' widow said the couple had not been subjected to any threats.
Lead murder investigator Rafael Rangel from the 14th Military Police Battalion (BPM) in Rio, said witnesses saw armed men kidnap the businessman. 'We believe that the people who took him knew the family's routine,' said Rangel.
Investigators are working on the hypothesis that Mr Santos could have been murdered by a drugs gang because of Mrs Silva's work at a military police base in a local slum.
The Police Pacification Unit in the Morro do Sao Carlos is one of dozens set up in Rio's favelas to retake control of the city's slums from violent drug traffickers.
However, according to police chief Rafael Rangel, Mrs Silva worked as a social worker in the base and didn't patrol the streets or make arrests like other police officers.
He told Brazil's O Dia newspaper the motives of the murder are still unclear.
He said: 'Mrs Silva has no idea who would have done this. Neither she, her husband or any other member of the family have suffered any type of threat as far as she knows.
'There is nothing that would justify such a barbarous crime.'
Santos did not have a police record.
Later today Brazilian police said body parts dumped beside a city river were believed to be those of Mr Santos.
The player's brother-in-law told Brazil's Globo G1 website that family members had positively identified a torso found next to the Guandu river in Queimados, greater Rio de Janeiro, by a birth mark on Mr Santos' stomach.
A police spokesman said other body parts had also been found in the area and were being DNA tested.
He said the murder bears the hallmarks of an execution by drug gangsters, but stressed that "every line of investigation" is still open.
The couple had been together for 11 years and were described as 'lovely' by neighbours.
'They were a happy, quiet couple,' said a neighbour, who asked not to be identified. 'But you never know what may have motivated a crime as stupid and as senseless as this.'
Mr Santos' played as a professional footballer between 1996 and 2005 - during which he scored 33 goals in 103 matches as a striker. Nicknamed Humble Hero, he was signed to a number of second division teams. He also played abroad for Swedish Club Oster Vaxjo and Olimpia in Honduras.
A recent United Nations report into drug trafficking-related crime in Brazil found that more than half of the homicides, robberies and thefts have a direct or indirect link with this criminal activity.

50 Cent Sentenced To Three Years Probation For Domestic Violence
In a deal worked out by his lawyers that removes a serious domestic violence charge, 50 has agreed to plead no contest to one count of misdemeanor vandalism and was sentenced on Monday to three years probation.
He must complete 30 days of community service and attend counseling, as well as pay $7,100 in restitution to Daphne Narvarez, the mother of his second child.
The former couple got into a fight on June 23, when according to Narvarez, 50, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, kicked open a bedroom door at her Toluca Lake condo before kicking her. In August, he was charged with domestic violence and four counts of vandalism, and faced up to five years in prison if convicted.
According to TMZ, a restraining order against the rapper remains in effect.

14 year old boy rapes 9 year old girl to death in Ikorodu

The police in Lagos State have commenced investigation into how a nine-year-old girl died, after sustaining injuries caused by alleged consistent rape. According to police authorities, the deceased was raped over five times, by a 14-year-old student, Onyi Adimabua, in the Ikorodu area of the state.
The father of the deceased, Simeon Jigo, told Punch Metro that Onyi is the son of the proprietor of the school his daughter attended. He said his daughter opened up about the rape when she started having medical problems. The 77-year-old man said his daughter died on October 3, 2013.

Man Drugs Wife For 3-Day Marathon Sex In Lagos
According to PMNews, the mother of three children made the shocking revelation at Ejigbo Customary Court in Lagos State on Monday while testifying before the court following a petition she filed before the court for dissolution of their 15-year marriage.
The 30-year old housewife claimed that two days after she gave birth to their child, her husband started pestering her for sex in the presence of her mother, who was on a visit.
Glory told the court that she denied her husband sex because she was still recovering from the pangs of childbirth and was breast feeding, but he accused her of having extramarital affairs and cut the family's daily feeding allowance to N100 to punish her.
Glory alleged that she did not know that her husband had an ulterior motive when he gave her a soft drink while she was eating on the day her husband drugged her.
The nursing mother alleged that after she took the soft drink, she couldn't explain what happened afterwards until she was revived in a hosptial three days later.
She said that she later knew that her husband drugged her to have sex with her when he confessed that he did so because she was denying him sex and was sleeping with other men.
She told the court that after the incident she moved out of his house and since then they have been living separately, while her husband abandoned their children for her to take care of them alone.
The embittered woman had petitioned the court seeking for the dissolution of their 15-year marriage on the grounds that her husband was threatening her life, did not take care of her and their children and beat her, adding that she does not love him anymore.
Glory asked the court to compel Alex to take care of their children by providing for their upkeep and education. In response, Alex denied all the allegations made against him and said he had been taking care of his family until trouble started.
Alex said he used to give his wife N200 daily before leaving for work and wondered how she would claim that he did not take care of her and their children.He also said that he was no longer interested in the relationship and asked the court to dissolve the marriage, though he promised to provide N10,000 for the upkeep and education of the children.
The president of the court, Mr T. A. Eko, queried Alex for abandoning the responsibility of the training their children for his estranged wife to shoulder and asked him to have a change of heart for the interest of the children.
The matter was adjourned till March 2014.

Strike: Education minister, ASUU in secret meeting
The ASUU President, Dr. Nasir Fagge and the minister refused to speak with journalists after the meeting. Fagge did not respond to questions on the outcome of the meeting and the next line of action of the union.
He simply told correspondents that, "I am not in a position to talk."
At the meeting were the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof. Julius Okojie; the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Isaac Adewole and a few national officers of the union. Also, Vice-President Namadi Sambo on Tuesday met briefly with stakeholders in the nation's education sector.
The stakeholders were led to the meeting which was held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja by Wike. Other members of the delegation included Okojie and Adewole.
At the end of the brief session, none of the participants agreed to speak with journalists when approached. Other members of the team who came out of the venue of the meeting a few minutes before Wike came out had claimed that the minister would address journalists.
But Wike refused to answer questions when he emerged from the Vice President's office. He joined other members of the team in a brief consultation at the forecourt of the Presidential Villa before he hurriedly jumped into his waiting car. No official statement was also issued by the Vice President's office on the meeting.
Meanwhile, the Pan-Yoruba Socio-Cultural group, the Afenifere has appealed to both the Federal Government and the striking members of ASUU to shift grounds in the interest of the future of the students and education sector in general.
This was contained in a communique issued by the group and read to journalists by its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Yinka Odumakin, after the meeting of the group, on Tuesday in Akure. It expressed worries that both parties had failed to shift grounds on the industrial action which had been on since July 1.
The meeting, which was held at the residence of the Afenifere Leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, in Akure, also noted that the development was not healthy for the nation's educational sector.
In a related development, the National Association of Kwara State Students has called on President Goodluck Jonathan to take a pivotal role by personally being involved in the negotiation to resolve the strike.
In a statement signed by its President, Ajadi Muhideen and Public Relations Officer, Sulyman Alimi, on Tuesday in Ilorin, NAKSS said such act by Jonathan would further show his commitment to education growth and advancement.
It hoped that the direct involvement of Jonathan in the negotiation would enhance the quicker resolution of the crisis.
According to the association, Nigerian students are tired of suffering inadequate provision of infrastructure as well as lack of motivation for their lecturers and insufficient funding.
It stated that there was inadequate lecture rooms in many tertiary institutions, adding that under-furnished lecture halls, poorly equipped or lack of laboratories were some of the challenges facing the nation's institutions. NAKSS urged other labour unions in the country to embark on solidarity strike.
It said, "The Nigerian students are intellectuals and can see where the wrong is coming from. We do not need anybody to sponsor us, the ills are there for all to see.
"It does not go with reason why any Nigerian student will say a demand for 26 per cent budgetary allocation or the duly earned allowances of university lecturers being requested for is unrealistic."

SAD!!! Nollywood Yoruba Actress Dies Of Spiritual Attack
Before her sudden death last week, she was a member of ANTP Ibadan chapter. She worked with Ojopagogo movie caucus in Ibadan until her death.
The actress who married Mr Olalekan Oluseye in style last year died this past Wednesday at the age of 32.
Sources claim she died of an apparent spiritual attack. Janet was said to have complained of minor pains on her foot on a movie set few months ago.
The attack left her in a bad health state after she was unable to work for months.
She was treated at the hospital and later transferred to a spiritual care center but all efforts to get her well proved abortive.
Janet Atayero Oluseye eventually lost the battle to the attack that left her incapacitated for months. She was buried in Lagos last week Wednesday. May her soul rest in perfect peace (amen).

Yang Hu was left in agony after severing his manhood from his body, and decided to cycle to the hospital to have it re-attached to his body.
But rather than prep him for immediate surgery, doctors told him to get on his bike again and go home because he forgot to bring it with him.
Yang, from Jiaxing, in Zhejiang province, east China, eventually rode home to pick up his penis but doctors hit him with yet more bad news - it had been without blood for too long and was therefore impossible to re-attach.
The 26-year-old was depressed at his single life since he moved to the city and began long hours at a clothing factory, according to pals.
His depression grew so bad that he cut off his penis in a sudden act of haste, believing it would stop him thinking about finding a lover.
Yang's pals have now blasted the doctors at the hospital for not providing an ambulance for him to go home and collect his penis.
They said that his private parts could have been saved if he hadn't had to cycle back, taking up valuable time.
Stuart Frain was seconds away from death when he accidentally cut off his arm
Last year retired fireman Stuart Frain accidentally hacked off his arm using a circular saw.
He picked up the limb - whcih was barely hanging on to the rest of his body, and ran hundreds of yards with it before he finally managed to get help.
He just managed to get to hospital in time for the arm to be re-attached to his body.
Mr Frain said at the time: "Because it's quite secluded where I live I ran for help holding the arm.
"When I arrived at hospital they said that I'd probably only been about 90 seconds away from death."

Another plane crash averted in Abuja
The pilot told the passengers that he took to the air again to avoid a collision with another aircraft on the tarmac.
The airline Flight VL2104 took off from the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos at noon and was scheduled to land in Abuja at about 1.05pm.
The pilot had already announced final descent into Abuja and asked all passengers and cabin crew to fasten their seat belts but the pilot suddenly took off to the air again with barely 30 seconds to touch ground.
The plane had 150 passengers on board. A correspondent of The PUNCH was one of the passengers.
After about three minutes of gaining altitude, the pilot announced that he decided to take off again to avoid colliding with an aircraft that was on ground.
He said that after he had been granted clearance to land, it was later discovered that the other aircraft was not fast enough, hence his decision to take off.
The aircraft hovered for another 20 minutes in the air before finally landing at about 1.30pm.
While the drama lasted, the passengers were panic-stricken, especially when the plane entered into turbulent weather on air.
The PUNCH correspondent said that among the passengers were five different complete families.
One of the passengers, a nursing mother, who was breastfeeding her son at the time the pilot took off again reportedly withdrew the breast from the boy's mouth and started praying profusely while the baby's cry rented the air.
When the plane finally landed, the passengers struggled to disembark.
"Are you still sitting down? Let me rush down in case it will suddenly take off again," a middle-aged man was heard teasing one of his co-passengers.
The incident came less than a month after an Embraer aircraft operated by Associated Airlines with registration number SCD 361, conveying the corpse of a former Governor of Ondo State, Chief Olusegun Agagu, from Lagos to Akure for burial, crashed on October 3 shortly after take-off at Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos.
Thirteen passengers in the crashed plane were killed, including a commissioner in Ondo State, Deji Falae.
