BREAKING: 125 students bag First Class in UNILAG

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) lived up to its man­tra as the ‘Nation’s Pride’ with 125 graduat­ing students finishing in First Class division for the 2013/2014 session. Top on the list was 21-year old Akinpelumi Korede of the Department of Chemical Engineering, with Cumu­lative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.96 as the best graduating student of the university. The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Rahamon Bello, disclosed this on Fri­day during an interactive ses­sion with journalists, where he announced the three-day convocation activities, slated for Tuesday April 28 – 30. He said the university would be graduating 10,600 students, with 5,836 (55 per cent) of them to be awarded diplomas, certificates and first degrees.

He said 45 per cent of the graduating students (4,768) would be awarded higher degrees in Postgraduate Di­plomas, Masters degrees and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Further breakdown of the graduating students showed that 103 of them would bag PhD, while 4,330 others would smile home with Mas­ters degrees.
Bello said UNILAG was gradually becoming a post­graduate university with accolades streaming in on regular basis. “Our students and staff are winning laurels, locally and internationally, depicting the academic ex­cellence the university por­trays”, he said.
Aside, Korede who emerged the overall best student, Mr. Shittu Wasiu Sesan of the Department of Finance emerged second best graduating student, with a CGPA of 4.91. Also, Mr. Ogagaoghene Samuel Envwu of the Department of Finance and Miss Adeogun Margaret Adedayo of the Department of Microbiolo­gy jointly emerged the third best graduating students of the university with 4.90 CGPA.
In an exclusive interview with Saturday Sun, Korede, who lost his father in August last year, said his success was borne out of hard work, as he strived to live up to the expectations of people around him. According to him, he diligently main­tained 5.0 CGPA consis­tently for six semesters, such that getting three Bs in his third year became his worst nightmare in the university
